Day 2 - Saturday - General Nogi's Residence
I woke up at 6:30 am and already felt refreshed and ready to start the day. Shaina san...not so much. ; p Eventually, Shaina san awoke and we headed downstairs for breakfast. The Asia Center includes breakfast in your stay which makes waking up so easy...just throw on your clothes and head right down the stairs for a small feast. I had miso soup, salmon, which is a bit different here as it was white salmon and had a nice smoked taste. I added the fish into my rice bowl. It was deeeelicious! We sat with two of Shaina's classmates who had been up since 5am partying in Roppongi. The decided to make an appearance for breakfast but decided upon not making an appearance for class. Yes, sadly, Shaina had to attend 4 hours of class on Saturday.
While Shaina was in class I decided to head to Roppongi which is just a few blocks from our hotel in Akasaka. On my way, just a couple of blocks from hotel, I stopped along my walk to visit General Noji's Residence. The Nogi Residence was home to General Nogi until September 13, 1912, when on the day of Emperor Meiji's funeral, the couple committed ritual suicide in order to follow their emperor to the grave. I was lucky enough to watch a wedding ceremony that was already under way. It was really quite something to be on those grounds. Further inside there was a smaller Shinto style shrine. I was able to experience the ritual of cleansing my hands and drinking from the fountain outside the shrine.
